Education Times: As Tokyo Olympics get underway, Indian sportspersons and their coaches will be firmly in the spotlight. Just like the players train to compete in their respective sports category, their coaches, too, have to undergo a lot of training before they are appointed for the job.
Sports coaching has now become a highly specialized profession and an increasing number of sportspersons are now opting for diploma and degree courses such as Diploma in Sports Medicine and MSc Sports Coaching to become a sports coach. National Sports University, established in 2018 offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Sports Coaching. The four-year BSc in Sports Coaching program focuses on sports techniques, exercise physiology, teaching methods, etc.
Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, which is also one of Asia’s largest sports institutes, offers a master’s degree in Sports Coaching in athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.
“Our efforts are to create high-caliber coaches,” IP Nagi, deputy director, Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala. “We have produced thousands of coaches so far,” he adds, explaining that there was no disruption because of the pandemic. “Rather, we benefitted from it. Our coaches monitored students through videos. We asked candidates to send videos of their exercises and then coaches analyzed them and were able to point out weaknesses through tabs and smartphones,” says Nagi.
